Housings change significantly from one generation to the next and there is no cross-compatibility between them. To identify yours, the chassis code in column E of your registration document is the reliable reference, especially on imported M3s that may differ from European-spec cars.

On the options side: if your factory mirror includes a turn signal in the housing, verify that the replacement model retains it. Adding a dynamic turn signal where there was none previously may require additional wiring depending on your vehicle's factory equipment.

Can you fit mirror caps on an M3 without removing the entire housing?

In most cases, so-called replacement caps clip onto the factory structure without removing the complete mechanism. You keep your original folding, defrosting, and turn signal functions.
